Character Profiles VINE VEIN #9: Hargor
Younger brother to Gregor, Hargor was 18 during Age 105 of the 2nd Era. Age 101 is when Nebra Oremire found and recruited him and his brother into the Order Dragtide, when he was just a young 14-age-old Shaper. He was a swiftly burning orb of youthful, playful energy, a trickster, prank-maker, annoyingly optimistic at times, finger-pointer, nickname giver, and softener of the harshest times.
His eldest brother, Turor, had brought him and Gregor to the Copper City in Age 96, seeking to start their lives over after their father was killed while hunting. They were a family of Shapers through and through, and the trio of brothers had been trained in the Old Ways at very young ages. Hargor became a Shaper at 7, and Gregor at 5. Turor was taught by their father, Gregor by Turor, and Hargor by Gregor. It was something that bonded the family, that solidified their bond, and that they had made their best memories together doing.
A Better Life Turned Sour
The rules for a Shaper in the Copper City were clear: there was to be no demonstration of Shaper abilities in public, and there was to be no open celebration of said culture in public either. Hargor and his brothers hadn’t known of these mandates before coming to the Copper City, but they couldn’t turn back and go home. The trek to Vestean had nearly killed them, so they would have to adhere to the rules in this place that was to be their new home. Turor had reassured his brothers that they didn’t need to do anything public as Shapers anyways, so this could still be their home, and that they could still honor the Old Ways on their own privately. Turor had saved their lives countless times from Leviathans on the way from Encroachia, but was unwilling to do so again to get them back.
They were able to adapt to life in the Copper City with relative ease, and Turor was able to secure a job as a garment maker—he was rather gifted with the needle and thread, and would even pass this skill on to his brothers before his passing. Speaking of his passing, Turor would meet his end in Age 98 to a foul illness in a city full of such Vexings, after he and his brothers survived many others, and the Lightless. The Lightless had been something that had on many occasions nearly caused the brothers to expose themselves publicly as Shapers, as they had encountered one of the creatures one night, but Turor was able to get them back home safely without incident. But, this could’ve been the very encounter that caused Turor to get sick, protecting his young brothers, while also protecting their Shaper identities.
After Turor’s death, Hargor was taken care of by Gregor, and the two of them mourned as they maintained their late brother’s clothier shop. Left behind with a home, a way of earning a living, and an unrealized dream, Hargor and Gregor live each day the best they can, and strive all the time to make the Copper City the place that their brother thought and hoped it would be. A new home, a good home, and a place to make more good memories together.
