THE LIGHTLESS Character Profiles #11: Lindsey Delpo
Born and raised in Morrowtown, Lindsey had seen its rapid decline firsthand. Living now in Halestock, near the southern edge of Quadrant One, she didn’t miss her hometown, because she had assigned herself to its protection as an officer of Leviathans and Apex Mammals (LAAM). Her captain had been good enough to allow Lindsey and her partner and best friend Asuka Hinode to look after Morrowtown, giving them first dibs on any jobs that came about there. The recent newest wave of boosted drugs had hit Quadrant One, and Morrowtown always suffered greatly during these times, as many of its residents were hooked on the super-potent, side-effect roulette, tampered-with narcotics.
Backs Turned
Lindsey’s family had effectively disowned her after she began her career with LAAM. Many people shared in their belief that the Leviathan Safety Organization(L.S.O.) were the reason why Unfeasted was in the state it was in, since it was their job to stop Leviathans from entering the Leviathan Free Zone(LFZ) in the first place. Lindsey had tried for years to get her parents to come around, to no avail. They hadn’t spoken in three years by 1979, and still Lindsey was a regular to her old stomping grounds, always hoping she might bump into her parents, and always leaving disappointed. At least she could ensure their safety, if even she was never recognized for her service by the only ones she craved the validation from.
This was something that she and Asuka related to the most; Asuka’s family also spited her for ‘wasting her life’ working for LAAM, and she too hadn’t seen them in years. They, however, they believed in what they were doing, despite the many flaws of their overlord of an organization. They just wanted to be that difference in LAAM that everyone else talked about, the missing ingredient it needed to get back to the morals it had originally spouted upon its origination.
Just Another Job
March 1979, the LAAM Halestock office in Quadrant One receives a phone call from the Morrowtown General Hospital: something is killing people, and their help is needed immediately.
Lindsey and Asuka are dispatched in a hurry. Death wasn’t always a part of their job, as not all Leviathan herbivores were prone to trampling or goring, and some smaller, more docile animals managed to slip through the Great Partitions as well in addition to the larger, more lethal carnivores. However, they were ready for anything. They had their shotguns and tranq-guns, and normally would’ve had a few gas grenades, but those hadn’t been restocked in a few months, so they would have to do without.
This job would come to be so much more than that. It was a brick wall, a roadblock, a tsunami wave a hundred stories high, and Lindsey and Asuka were a pair of dinghies, dragging plastic anchors in the face of the storm of the century.
