THE LIGHTLESS Character Profiles #12: Jace Carver

Fifteen, Jace had been dealing with swapping medications and their withdrawals for depression for two years now. Still he hadn’t found the right combo, and was going through another period of withdrawal now. Feeling worse than he ever had about the situation, he was feeling more depressed than before he started trying to fix the situation—a beyond frustrating dilemma.

Within this hamster wheel of emotions, Jace still managed to find some joy in spending time with his two best friends: Samantha Redding and Iacob Dagostino. While Iacob was no longer a frequent, Sam and Jace still visited their favorite spot in Morrowtown, Tunnel Creek. They didn’t catch crayfish, or wade through the ankle-deep water any more, but they would waste the hours away drawing on the walls of the tunnel that covered a portion of the lively creek, talking about what one another was going through. Iacob he would see after school if they decided to play basketball or video games, and they too would on occasion talk about what was troubling them, giving each other advice on how to deal with their problems. Jace’s parents, Weatherly and Roy, had tried out a separation recently, blaming it on the fact that the two of them had just grown apart during the last year. Still, Jace felt incredible guilt, and the short time that his parents were apart were some of his darkest days.

They would come back together, however, easing the strain that had been put on the Carver family. Apart, Roy and Weatherly hadn’t liked the outcome, and realized that neither could live without the other, that they had made a mistake. Jace had been elated, and even found some relief in the zapping fits that would consume his brain—though only temporarily. At this point, Jace would’ve done anything to distract him from the pain he was going through, or to make it leave once and for all.

Careful What You Wish For

On the eve of Jace’s family moving to Voghill, Morrowtown would find itself the host of a new form of life. Something sinister, deadly, stinking, and unfeeling. Jace, reluctantly, found himself comparing himself to these creatures, as his hometown was torn asunder.

His family was together though, and together they could make it through anything. But what about Sam and Iacob? Jace’s heart raced with the thought of his friends in peril, and he knew he was going to have to find them, to ensure that they survived this abrupt invasion. Morrowtown had been invaded by Leviathans and foul animals before, but it had never experienced Lightless…
