THE LIGHTLESS Character Profiles #9: Gunner Hershberg
Captain of the Feartred Division of Army Reserves in Dredgeburg, Gunner had not only done his job long enough to fall out of love with it, but had found himself without any other options to transition himself into without having to start over from the ground up. A part of himself spited him for not foreseeing such an end, but another part of him, a more rational, reasonable side, knew that such foresight still might not have helped—it could’ve just led him into a another place he was anxious to get away from.
His anxiety was well hidden around his troops. So well hidden, in fact, that he had developed chest pains recently, and had made various trips to medical in order to continue being screened and cleared for duty. While not always active on a job every day, the jobs had picked up some after the recent uptick in Leviathan activity. L.S.O. quickly claimed many of these jobs, however, as Feartred operated outside of their all-powerful monopoly that had over the government—they were the government at this point. Even still, Feartred wasn’t in the business of becoming a million-dollar organization, they were there to protect those who couldn’t do so themselves, a mission that Gunner took very seriously. Even if he had become somewhat disenchanted with the whole package that came along with being a soldier. It was a tough job, and some days he found himself slow to get out of bed, and even slower to get in once the day was done.
